POSITION SUMMARY

Horn Relief is seeking a qualified and committed Somali-speaking individual to join the Horn Relief team as an intern. The internship will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, and will support Horn Relief’s Jetty Redevelopment Project (JRP) as well as assisting with the engagement of the Somali Diaspora in both fundraising and awareness building for Horn Relief. The Intern will act as a Special Assistant to Horn Relief’s Senior Advisor and provide administrative support to the overall JRP.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

Horn Relief is an African-lead international development and humanitarian organization. We aim to improve the conditions of those who are living in marginalized areas in the Horn of Africa. We strengthen rural livelihoods through environmental awareness, training, technology transfer and innovative humanitarian projects in pursuit of a peaceful, self-reliant, and greener future. Currently, Horn Relief operates 7 offices in USA and Somalia/Somaliland and has an annual operating budget of over US$ 8 million per year. Horn Relief anticipates expansion of programs to other countries in the Horn of Africa region. Horn Relief sectors in which we work include food security and livelihoods, environment, education (formal and non-formal), water and sanitation, gender and human rights, and humanitarian programs.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Horn Relief’s Jetty Redevelopment Project (JRP) is a 36-month project that commenced in January 2007 and is partially funded by Oxfam Novib. It aims to restore export options and seize economic opportunities as well as enhance local capacity to manage resources and promote peaceful and equitable governance in the region. The JRP is constructing a 125 metre Jetty (port) on the shores of Laas Qoray, to be owned and managed by the community through the creation of a not-for-profit jetty management structure (Jetty Authority, Jetty Foundation).

The JRP also engages in wide-ranging community mobilisation, capacity building and training of existing essential area-based businesses, such as livestock production and the fishing industry. To promote community ownership of the project and support women and men’s active participation in the rehabilitation of community structures as well as to strengthen local governance, a framework will need to be developed for extensive community mobilization/ consensus building and for the creation of the governing/management not-for-profit bodies.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

Under the direct supervision of the Programme-Fundraising Officer and Senior Advisor, the Intern will perform the following duties:

Provide daily support to Horn Relief’s Senior Advisor, including liaising with Horn Relief Staff, writing letters to potential donors, handling funds and travel requests and acting as a focal point for the Senior Advisor when she is on mission.

Assist with the JRPs engagement with the Somali Diaspora, including translations and liaison.

Provide general administrative assistance to the JRP office in Nairobi

Provide general logistics support including travel arrangements; following up on procurements etc;

Other tasks as defined by supervisors.

BENEFITS

The Intern will be provided with a monthly stipend to cover local travel costs however the intern will be responsible for their own accommodation and subsistence costs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Horn Relief is actively seeking a candidate who is committed to its mission and vision.

In particular, Horn Relief will be seeking a candidate who has:

A minimum of a B.A. or B.Sc. in any relevant field;

Experience working in a position with similar responsibilities;

Strong attention to detail and a high level of organization;

Strong written communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of team;

Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel.

Strong proficiency in written and oral communication in English and Somali is required. A

Willingness to commit to a minimum of 6 months.
